Following our alert EL(11)A/32 issued on 21 December 2011 B.Braun Medical Ltd has advised us that additional batches of NuTRIflex Lipid products may contain particulates and should be subject to the same additional filtration process previously recommended during infusion. A list of the additional batches is given in Appendix 1. The earlier advice and list of affected batches remains in operation.

For the batches listed in both this alert and alert EL(11)A/32 issued on 21 December 2011 users are being advised by B.Braun Medical Ltd to use in-line filtration with a 1.2 micron filter containing a membrane that is both bacteria/particulate-retentive and air-eliminating when infusing any of the listed batches of the above NuTRIflex Lipid products. We understand this is in accordance with standard guidelines from the Royal College of Nursing and should not result in any problems during administration.

Suitable filters are being provided by B.Braun Medical Ltd and in future will be despatched with the affected batches. If users have any problems with filter supplies they should contact B.Braun Customer Services on 0114 225 9000 for advice.

For medical information enquiries, please call B.Braun Medical Information on 0800 298 0299.

We understand that unaffected batches of some products within the NuTRIflex Lipid range are expected to become available around the end of January 2012. We expect to issue revised advice at that time so users are adequately informed.

Recipients of this Drug Alert should bring it to the attention of relevant contacts by copy of this letter. Primary Care Trusts are asked to forward this letter and single page Appendix 1 to relevant clinics, but not General Practitioners and Community Pharmacists.
