Pfizer has issued a letter reminding healthcare professionals of the correct route of administration of Hemabate® (carboprost tromethamine) sterile solution, following spontaneous reports of adverse drug reactions due to the incorrect administration of the product.

Carboprost tromethamine should be administered as a deep intramuscular injection as described in the SPC.  Cases of incorrect route of administration have mainly involved intravenous injection, and some were associated with serious cardiac adverse events.

Healthcare professionals are reminded to carefully check the administration instructions for this product prior to administration, and also to carefully check product labelling when administering any prostaglandin containing product, as the route of administration may vary between products and indication.
