According to a report by PharmaLive, the European Commission has approved the use of vildagliptin (Galvus®) as monotherapy, in patients with type 2 diabetes who are unable to control their blood sugar with diet and exercise alone, and who cannot take metformin.  Vildagliptin is already approved for use as dual oral therapy in combination with metformin, a sulphonylurea, or a thiazolidinedione.
