This review looks at the benefits that cardiac surgery patients may derive from tight glycaemic control/ intensive insulin therapy, under the following headings:
• Evidence that intensive insulin therapy is beneficial in the context of cardiac surgery
• Insulin signalling pathways
• Cardioprotective effects of insulin
