According to BBC Health News, Pancreatic Cancer UK has published a report which sets out the findings from their “Study for Survival” report – a comprehensive study mapping survival following pancreatic cancer diagnosis. The study draws on the experiences and views of over 1,000 people living and working with pancreatic cancer.
In the UK, most pancreatic cancer patients (about 80%) are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease when cure is no longer an option. According to the report, even those patients who are diagnosed at a stage when their cancer can be treated with surgery do poorly with only between 7%-25% surviving five years or more. Furthermore, although a fifth of patients with this deadly cancer could receive potentially life-saving surgery, only 10% do.
