The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is undertaking a review to decide whether its clinical guideline on irritable bowel syndrome (CG61) should be updated.

Within the review proposal consultation document, NICE has concluded that the guideline should not be updated at this time.  Although the evidence gathered suggested that some areas may potentially need updating (including those regarding relaxation, antispasmodics and tricyclics for the management of symptoms), the evidence base for these areas are limited and inconclusive so it may be pertinent to wait for further, more conclusive evidence before considering updating the guideline. These areas will be factored into the future reviews.

Registered stakeholders for this guideline are invited to comment on the provisional review decision via the NICE website (see link below). Individuals and organisations not registered as stakeholders are not able to comment. It is recommended that they register as a stakeholder or contact the registered stakeholder organisation that most closely represents their interests and pass their comments to them.

The review proposal consultation runs from 6-17 June.
