Summary
by: Nicola Pocock

This MeReC Bulletin from the National Prescribing Centre (NPC) describes the management of constipation using a case-based approach, based on the relevant Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) review.

The management of constipation in adults is discussed, using an example patient presenting to her GP to cover assessment, consideration of specialist referral, use of non-pharmacological treatments, when to use laxatives, which laxatives are available and the current evidence base, when to review treatment, and new treatments available (prucalopride).  The treatment of elderly patients is briefly discussed; this section notes that this is essentially the same as young adults; stimulant laxatives should be considered ahead of bulking agents for treating constipation caused by a lack of mobility.

The article then goes on to discuss the management of constipation in a child or young person, and how this differs from the approach outlined for adults.  The relevant NICE guidance on this topic is referred to.  Please see the link below for details.

Thanks for your comment. This results from a revamping of the NPC website (www.npc.nhs.uk) and the links to earlier issues of MeReC Bulletin appear to have been lost for the time being. - NeLM Administration
