Raltegravir (Isentress) has been approved in the US for use with other antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in children and adolescents aged 2 to 18. A single, multi-centre clinical trial has assessed raltegravir in 96 children and adolescents who had previously received treatment for HIV-1 infection. After 24 weeks of treatment, 53% had an undetectable amount of HIV in their blood. The most commonly reported severe, treatment-related side effects include insomnia and headache.
In the UK, raltegravir is not licensed for use in children.
