The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal has featured a report discussing antiviral resistance of the Influenza A H1N1 2009 virus to neuraminidase inhibitor antiviral drugs.

The report notes that from the time the new virus was identified in April, 2009, up to April, 2011, the World Health Organisation (WHO) received global data for more than 27, 000 2009 pandemic H1N1 viruses, of which 447 were resistant to oseltamivir. Most of the resistant viruses were detected in individuals undergoing oseltamivir treatment, many of whom were immunocompromised, but a small number were detected in individuals that were neither receiving oseltamivir nor in known contact with others receiving treatment.

The report discusses some of the issues presented by antiviral resistance during the 2009 pandemic addressing it from public health, laboratory, and clinical perspectives, and make recommendations relating to current testing, reporting, and management of patients infected with neuraminidase inhibitor-resistant influenza.
