The Aspirin for Asymptomatic Atherosclerosis (AAA) study, which was initially presented at a conference last year, has now been published in full.
AAA examined whether primary prevention using low-dose aspirin was beneficial in people identified as being at increased cardiovascular risk by having a low ankle-brachial index (ABI). The ABI is the ratio of systolic BP at the ankle to that in the arm and is considered to be an indicator of sub-clinical atherosclerosis.
As noted in the report of the conference presentation, carried on NHS Choices, the study did not show any significant benefit from low-dose aspirin in this group.
