NICE has published an Appraisal Consultation Document (ACD) containing the Committee’s draft recommendation on the use of everolimus for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the NHS in England and Wales, alongside a summary of the evidence considered.

The preliminary recommendation is that everolimus is not recommended for the second-line treatment of advanced RCC.  The Committee was satisfied that everolimus met the criteria for being a life-extending, end-of-life treatment, and that the evidence presented for this consideration was sufficiently robust; however the QALY weighting needed for the cost effectiveness of the drug to fall within the current threshold range would be too great, even when the patient access scheme was incorporated. Therefore the Committee concluded that it could not recommend everolimus for the second-line treatment of advanced RCC as a cost-effective use of NHS resources.  Please see the link below for further details.

This draft guidance is now available for public consultation. Consultees, healthcare professionals and members of the public are able to comment on the recommendations which are available from 9 February until 2 March 2010 on the NICE website.
