Movetis has launched prucalopride (Resolor®) in the UK for the symptomatic treatment of chronic constipation in women in whom laxatives fail to provide adequate relief. The drug is an enterokinetic agent that the company claims “represents a new approach to the symptomatic treatment of constipation in women for whom laxatives have failed to provide adequate relief because of underlying impaired gut motility.” The recommended dose is 2mg daily, but the elderly should start on 1mg daily, increasing to 2mg daily, if needed. The cost of 28 x 1mg is £38.69 and 28 x 2mg, £59.52. The company is currently in discussion with NICE about a Single Technology Assessment process for its product.
