This report is based on the 2007-08 Health Episode Statistics dataset and examines the time spent in A&E in England by patients and their destination on leaving the department. Key facts include the following:

• The visit to A&E for 73% of patients (where records were available) was completed within 3 hours; 96% were completed within 4 hours.

• 41% of all A&E patients were discharged with no follow-up required whilst a further 21% were admitted to hospital.
