This article provides an overview of the pharmacology, the efficacy, and adverse effects of methylnaltrexone and alvimopan. Both drugs are peripherally acting μ-opioid receptor antagonists - a new class of drugs for reversing opioid-induced side-effects on the gastrointestinal system.
