The European Medicines Agency has recommended the withdrawal of all medicines containing benfluorex in the EU because their risks, particularly the risk of heart valve disease, are greater than their benefits. Benfluorex  is  a lipid regulating drug used in the treatment of hyperlipidaemias and also as an adjunct in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in some EU countries (but not UK).
