The first SIGN (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) guideline on colorectal cancer was published in 1996 and updated in 2003. New developments in treatment have necessitated a revision of this guideline; the most radical changes have been in the area of non-surgical oncology but prevention, screening, family history, symptoms, investigations and surgical treatment have also been updated.
