NICE has published a clinical guideline (CG 124) on the management of hip fracture in adults, covering the time from admission to secondary care through to final return to the community and discharge from specific follow-up.  The guideline includes recommendations on the following:

• Imaging options in occult hip fracture

• Timing of surgery

• Analgesia

• Anaesthesia

• Planning the theatre team

• Surgical procedures

• Mobilisation strategies

• Multidisciplinary management

• Patient and carer information

The guideline has been reported widely in the press; these reports have focused on the recommendation that surgery for hip fracture should be performed on the day of, or the day after, admission.

A number of tools are available to help support implementation of this guideline, including a baseline assessment tool, clinical audit tool, and a costing report and template.  Please see the link below to access these and the full guideline.
