NICE has issued guidance on cetuximab for the treatment of metastatic and/or recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck and states that cetuximab in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy is not recommended for this indication.

The Committee was not persuaded that the use of cetuximab plus platinum-based chemotherapy fulfilled all the criteria to be considered as a life-extending, end-of-life treatment and could not be recommended as a cost-effective use of NHS resources.
NICE advises healthcare professionals that they should not stop prescribing cetuximab in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy for people who were already taking this combination when the guidance was issued - treatment should be discontinued at an appropriate time.
