by: Nicola Pocock

This Topic Minibite covers the prevention of venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism) in people travelling long distances.

The topic includes a discussion on risk assessment and management according to risk: low (advice on general measures), moderate (general measures plus graduated compression stockings), and high (assess suitability for travel, if travelling necessary then as per moderate risk group plus seek advice from a haematologist as to whether prescription of a low molecular weight heparin is required).  There are separate recommendations for those with a recent hip or knee replacement, fracture, or recent DVT.

Of note, aspirin is not recommended for the prevention of travel-related deep vein thrombosis; this includes the return flight for people who have undertaken high altitude activities.  People already taking aspirin (for primary or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease) should not increase their dose.
