The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has advised NHS Boards and Area Drug and Therapeutic Committees that montelukast chewable tablet and granules (Singulair Paediatric) is accepted for restricted use within NHS Scotland as an alternative treatment option to low-dose inhaled corticosteroids for children aged 2 to 14 years, with mild persistent asthma who • do not have a recent history of serious asthma attacks that required oral corticosteroid use, and • who have demonstrated that they are not capable of using inhaled corticosteroids. The Committee states that it should be restricted to initiation by specialists in paediatric asthma care.
