This Primary Care Briefing has been produced to inform healthcare professionals in primary care of the new combination NSAID/proton pump inhibitor: naproxen/esomeprazole (Vimovo).

·  Esomeprazole-naproxen (Vimovo) combined tablet, taken twice a day, does not represent a significant therapeutic advance from existing alternatives.

·  Where a NSAID is recommended in combination with a PPI in national guidance, a PPI with the lowest acquisition cost should be chosen.

·  The place in therapy and advantages of Vimovo over existing products is unclear and the potentially high acquisition cost is not compatible with current financial constraints and QIPP programmes.

·  The use of generic naproxen twice a day and a low cost PPI once a day requires the patient to take just one additional tablet a day.
