The updated verdict on raloxifene (Evista®) for the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis from the Midlands Therapeutics Review and Advisory Committee (MTRAC) is that it is suitable for prescribing only within the restrictions placed by current NICE guidance. NICE does not recommend its use for primary prevention and can only be used for secondary prevention if bisphosphonates are not tolerated or are contra-indicated, and providing specific criteria are met. The Committee considered the evidence for this treatment to be relatively weak, and the availability of other treatments with better evidence for efficacy, and the adverse effects of raloxifene give it a low place in therapy.
