The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) does not recommend the use of calcium acetate/magnesium carbonate (Osvaren®) within NHS Scotland for the treatment of hyperphosphataemia associated with chronic renal insufficiency in patients undergoing dialysis (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis).

The drug advice (available at the link below) discusses the evidence submitted by the manufacturer and considered by the SMC when making their recommendation.  This notes that the combined preparation of calcium acetate/magnesium carbonate has been shown to reduce hyperphosphataemia associated with chronic renal disease; however the manufacturer did not present a sufficiently robust economic analysis to gain acceptance by the SMC.
