Following a resubmission, the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) does not recommend aliskiren (Rasilez®) for use within NHS Scotland for the treatment of essential hypertension.

The drug advice notes that aliskiren has shown comparable efficacy to other antihypertensive agents in terms of blood pressure reduction, though its effects on mortality and long-term morbidity are currently unknown.  The manufacturer did not present a sufficiently robust clinical or economic analysis to gain acceptance by the SMC for the position sought.
