Summary
by: Nicola Pocock

The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has accepted vildagliptin (Galvus®) for use within NHS Scotland for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus as dual oral therapy in combination with a sulphonylurea, in patients with insufficient glycaemic control despite maximal tolerated dose of a sulphonylurea or for whom metformin is inappropriate due to contraindications or intolerance.

The SMC has already issued advice on the use of vildagliptin in combination with metformin.  As this submission relates only to the use of vildagliptin in combination with a sulphonylurea, the SMC cannot recommend its use in combination with thiazolidinedione drugs.
