Following a full submission, the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has accepted ulipristal acetate (EllaOne®) for use within NHS Scotland for emergency contraception within 5 days of unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure.
The drug advice notes that the contraceptive efficacy of ulipristal was non-inferior to that of levonorgestrel when administered within the licensed time frame for emergency hormonal contraception in one Phase III study, and was statistically superior in a meta-analysis of two studies. Other treatments are available at lower drug acquisition cost.
