The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has accepted exenatide once weekly (Bydureon®) for use within NHS Scotland as a third-line treatment option for type 2 diabetes mellitus, as part of combination therapy.  The economic case for its second line use in combination with metformin in place of a sulphonylurea has not been made.
