The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has accepted fluticasone furoate (Avamys™) for use within NHS Scotland for the treatment of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis in adults, adolescents (12 years and over) and children (6 to
11 years).

The drug advice notes that the evidence to support the efficacy of fluticasone furoate comes from a number of comparator- and placebo-controlled studies conducted in adults and children with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

Prescribers should be aware that the recommended doses of fluticasone furoate are not equivalent, on a microgram per microgram basis, to other fluticasone nasal sprays currently available. Other intranasal steroids are available at a lower cost.
