The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has accepted etonogestrel / ethinylestradiol vaginal ring (NuvaRing®) for use within NHS Scotland for contraception. 

 

In this resubmission, the submitting company requested that the SMC consider use of this product in a sub-set of the licensed indication, for those patients who are dissatisfied with the oral contraceptive pill (i.e. a second-line option). 

 

The drug advice notes that results from two randomised phase III studies indicate that the contraceptive efficacy of NuvaRing® is similar to that of two combined oral contraceptives (Microgynon® and Yasmin®).  Cost-effectiveness has been demonstrated in women who chose to discontinue oral contraceptives.  Please see the link below for further details.
