The North East Treatment Advisory Group (NETAG) has produced an appraisal of the use of intravitreal dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex®) for macular oedema associated with retinal vein occlusions and recommended that it should only be used within NHS North East in cases of non-ischaemic central retinal vein occlusion, in accordance with draft guidelines from the Royal College Ophthalmologists (September 2010). Ozurdex® is not recommended in any cases of ischaemic or branch retinal vein occlusion. Individual patients in exceptional circumstances may be suitable for treatment, but such cases must be referred via local individual funding request mechanisms.
