MTRAC has issued an updated verdict on the use of gonadorelin analogues for endometriosis. This has been amended to remove discussion of use before surgery, with the aim of restoring it after further review of this indication.
The review concludes that these drugs are suitable for prescribing in primary care on the advice of a specialist or a GP with special interest in women's health. Evidence indicates that the drugs are as effective as alternative therapies for endometriosis, although evidence for efficacy with respect to placebo is limited and conflicting. Their place in therapy is considered low due to the incidence of adverse effects, especially their effect on bone mineral density.
