Dutasteride (Avodart®) The Scottish Medicines Consortium issues advice on dutasteride (Avodart®) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) The Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has completed its assessment on the above product and advises NHS Boards and Area Drug and Therapeutic Committees (ADTCs) that dutasteride is recommended for general use within NHSScotland. Dutasteride has demonstrated similar efficacy and safety to alternative 5á-reductase inhibitors in reducing prostate volume in patients with benign prostatic hypertplasia (BPH). Dutasteride is likely to be cost neutral to NHSScotland in the treatment of BPH.
