Because tranexamic acid is due to be available over-the-counter from pharmacies, the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin has featured a review of the efficacy and safety of tranexamic acid for the self-management of heavy menstrual bleeding.
The review describes current NICE guidelines on the management of heavy menstrual bleeding, and current evidence supporting the use of tranexamic acid. It concludes that “tranexamic acid, is an effective treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding and has been available on prescription for nearly 40 years. It reduces objective blood loss by up to 50%, and women may perceive related improvements in their quality of life. The drug has few unwanted effects. It is due to become available for over-the-counter purchase from pharmacies sometime in 2011, and is the first treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding to be available in this way. Its availability is likely to be an advantage for women who want to try a drug treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding without having to consult a doctor.”
