In its Final Appraisal Report, the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) has supported the use of valganciclovir (Valcyte®) powder for oral solution and tablets within NHS Wales for 200 days prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in CMV-negative kidney transplant patients who have received a transplant from a CMV-positive donor.  The use of the oral solution has been restricted to those patients who cannot take tablets or with a CrCl<10 ml/min.

The AWMSG has deemed both preparations as unsuitable for shared care for the above indication.
